What’s the significance of the bird in our logo?
The bird featured in NH Coast’s logo is commonly referred to as a Bufflehead. The Bufflehead, the smallest diving duck in North American, is primarily seen in the NH Coastal Watershed during the winter where it dives for crustaceans, mollusks and other sources of saltwater-based food. In the early 20th century, Bufflehead populations had been reduced dramatically as a result of over-hunting. Due to its unique and very distinct appearance, the Bufflehead was a highly sought-after prize for hunters. However, between 1955 and 1992, the species rebounded as a result of widespread conservation efforts.
Like the Bufflehead, NH Coast is a distinct and easily recognizable organization. While the state has had long-standing statewide organizations focused on advocating for lake and river protection, no group before NH Coast had ever served a similar role for the coastal watershed. NH Coast believes that the coastal watershed is unique to that of other watersheds throughout the state and that its threats and issues are distinguishable and should be treated differently. NH Coast seeks to bring the coastal watershed’s issues to the fore and work with its statewide counterparts to address them and develop a more comprehensive strategy to watershed management.
